I think most people would agree with my thinking that music has the power to change and shape lives. I believe I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for my musical influences. On that note, I made a playlist of songs that have impacted me most so far in my life. This should also give you a little background on who I am.
1. Daddy’s Little Girl – Dean Martin
I grew up in a very Italian Catholic Northeast Philly family. This pretty much sums up my relationship with my Dad. We danced to it at my baptism, and we will dance to it on my wedding day (if we ever marry).
2. Little Things – Good Charlotte
Up until I heard this song I didn’t know there was music past Top 40 and the Ruff Ryders. THANK YOU GOOD CHARLOTTE!
3. Punk Rawk Show – MXPX
I began to learn a little bit more about Punk Rock/ Pop-Punk
4. I Wanna Be Sedated – The Ramones
Fearful that the Punk Scene would dub me a “poser” I read up on my Punk. I fell in love with The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Sham 69, etc…
5. Sound System – Operation Ivy
Okay, stop being an angry punk kid for no reason Kristen! This is when I cheered up and started to form my own opinions about social and political issues. And when I learned how to skank!
6. Have The Time – The Slackers
Speaking of skanking… my ska stage! I still have a spot in my heart for some good ska music. Ska was my happy place and while some people would say being a ska kid is lame, I think they are just too self conscious to dance like a fool!
7. Good Morning – Gene Kelly & Debbie Reynolds
My favorite song from Singing In the Rain! Try this: listen to this song first thing in the morning when you wake up. I guarantee you have a happy day!
8. Jesus, Etc. – Wilco
It’s high school, I’ve been listening to Ska, Punk, Hardcore and bad local bands for two years. Alas, there is music outside my blinders! Wilco opened my mind to meaningful lyrics and complicated music, you know more than three chords. They are my all time favorite band to this day.
9. Alfie’s Theme – Sonny Rollins
All I have to say is watch this old man rock out on a Sax and you’ll never be the same…
10. Definition – Black Star
After the Ruff Ryders scared me away I never thought I would like hip hop again. Thank you Mos Def and Talib Kweli for showing me the path to enlightenment.
11. Bowl Of Oranges – Bright Eyes
I fought the Bright Eyes craze for as long as I could. But I gave in, and you have to admit – the man tells a great story. This song helped me learn some life lessons in friendship and happiness.
12. I Can’t Get Next To You – The Temptations
I have this clear memory of my mom’s side of the family at the breakfast table playing their glasses and plates as instruments and belting this song out. I’ve never been the same. Not only is this one of my most amazing songs to ever come to existence, but it is also loaded with nostalgia for me.
13. This Must Be The Place – The Talking Heads
Listen to the words of this song. I don’t know what it is, it gives me chills.
So there it is, a random collection of songs that if they were never made, I would not be the Kristen that you know today.
Welcome to my home – See you soon!
