There are no words…

December 4, 2009

This is a song that I used to listen to in high school. And I wondered why my mom used to make me have weekly meetings with the counselor at my school…?

Dear DJs: I Dare you to re-mix this into a song to dance to. Dare you!!!

This is what happens when I blog at 4 AM… WHOA Speaking of 4 AM! Don’t forget about tomorrow at Samba!

Don’t forget to go to PYT for Local’s Only with Brendan Bring’em first. I’ll post a list of everything to do this weekend tomorrow. I want you guys to make an informed decision, I trust you will make the right one! ;) (shameless self advertising is something I do well…)

One more video that has to do with all things 4AM. One of my favorite poets. Rives. His poems are more impactful when you hear him speak them. His tone of voice and flow from from line to line give me chills!

I also suggest you check out his poem “Kite”. He performed it at Def Poetry Jam on HBO.

Hot Chip!

Very excited for their new album and I hope they will tour in the US after Europe!

I saw them play at the Troc last year and it was seriously memorable!

Priorities and Manners

December 3, 2009

I’m struggling with my observations of my generations priorities and manners lately.

Yes, we’re all guilty of a little selfishness and immaturity everyonce in a while – adults too!

I’m not saying to stick to social mores at the cost of your own happiness but I’m asking all of us to find a happy medium between being self involved materialistic young adults and being concerned with how we treat others and how we can inform ourselves and strive for a better tomorrow.

What brought me to this? 3 things today alone made me think about these issues:

1. A young man pushed himself in front of me and 3 others girls to get on the subway today.

- There were plenty of empty seats.

- There is a phrase “ladies first” for a reason

Where has chivalry gone? By no means am I completely traditional in gender roles. I do not expect a man to pay for dinner on a date or anything like that. And in the same sense if it were a girl, I would be just as mad. Be patient. Don’t be rude. Simple things that people have been ignoring more and more lately.

But gentlemen! Please!! How many times have I see an elderly person, pregnant woman or disabled person walk onto the bus or subway and no one got up to give them their seat. (except for me) I feel as a young, able bodied man, you should be the first to give up your seat.

2. I over heard a girl talking about how she was crying last night because her boyfriend spent so much money on her and she got everything for him on sale. What’s wrong with saving money?! And then she said she “only” got him flyers tickets for his birthday. She said, “what is he gonna do, just see two pieces of paper? I need to get him something to open

- THIS is your “problem”?!

- Flyers tickets are AMAZING. You’re giving him a gift of an experience which is worth way more than material gifts. I would take flyers tickets over jewelry, clothes or electronics ANY day.

- Take a look around you. Some people can’t afford to give their loved ones gifts sale or no sale.

Yes, we all get upset over silly things like this. But I’m asking you (and myself) to think about how these trivial problems show how good our life really is!

3. Journalism class

We talked about how the news is changing. How celebrities come to the front of the news instead of things like the new healthcare plan, or sending more troops to Afghanistan. Does anyone ACTUALLY care about Tiger Woods and his alleged affair? I sure don’t. Is he cheating on me? Nope!

People spend a ton of time on the internet – during that time why don’t you read some news while you’re facebook chatting?

Rainy Day Pick Me Up

November 23, 2009

This, my friends, is probably the best latte I have had in a very long time. Cafe Loftus is on 15th St. at Walnut. It is small and simple, how a coffee shop should be as far as I’m concerned. There was one man behind the counter making the drinks and ringing everyone up on the register. I could tell he was busy but he handled it very well. On top of the great service and amazing latte I also liked that they gave me a stirring spoon and plate to put my used spoon on after I stirred my sugar in. Very eco-friendly! I’m almost upset that I haven’t gone into this place until now.

So, next time you’re thinking about going to Starbucks on 15th St., think again, Cafe Lotus!

The Power of Music

November 23, 2009

I think most people would agree with my thinking that music has the power to change and shape lives. I believe I would not be the person I am today if it wasn’t for my musical influences. On that note, I made a playlist of songs that have impacted me most so far in my life. This should also give you a little background on who I am.

1. Daddy’s Little Girl – Dean Martin

I grew up in a very Italian Catholic Northeast Philly family. This pretty much sums up my relationship with my Dad. We danced to it at my baptism, and we will dance to it on my wedding day (if we ever marry).

2. Little Things – Good Charlotte

Up until I heard this song I didn’t know there was music past Top 40 and the Ruff Ryders. THANK YOU GOOD CHARLOTTE!

3. Punk Rawk Show – MXPX

I began to learn a little bit more about Punk Rock/ Pop-Punk

4. I Wanna Be Sedated – The Ramones

Fearful that the Punk Scene would dub me a “poser” I read up on my Punk. I fell in love with The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Sham 69, etc…

5. Sound System – Operation Ivy

Okay, stop being an angry punk kid for no reason Kristen! This is when I cheered up and started to form my own opinions about social and political issues. And when I learned how to skank!

6. Have The Time – The Slackers

Speaking of skanking… my ska stage! I still have a spot in my heart for some good ska music. Ska was my happy place and while some people would say being a ska kid is lame, I think they are just too self conscious to dance like a fool!

7. Good Morning – Gene Kelly & Debbie Reynolds

My favorite song from Singing In the Rain! Try this: listen to this song first thing in the morning when you wake up. I guarantee you have a happy day!

8. Jesus, Etc. – Wilco

It’s high school, I’ve been listening to Ska, Punk, Hardcore and bad local bands for two years. Alas, there is music outside my blinders! Wilco opened my mind to meaningful lyrics and complicated music, you know more than three chords. They are my all time favorite band to this day.

9. Alfie’s Theme – Sonny Rollins

All I have to say is watch this old man rock out on a Sax and you’ll never be the same…

10. Definition – Black Star

After the Ruff Ryders scared me away I never thought I would like hip hop again. Thank you Mos Def and Talib Kweli for showing me the path to enlightenment.

11. Bowl Of Oranges – Bright Eyes

I fought the Bright Eyes craze for as long as I could. But I gave in, and you have to admit – the man tells a great story. This song helped me learn some life lessons in friendship and happiness.

12. I Can’t Get Next To You – The Temptations

I have this clear memory of my mom’s side of the family at the breakfast table playing their glasses and plates as instruments and belting this song out. I’ve never been the same. Not only is this one of my most amazing songs to ever come to existence, but it is also loaded with nostalgia for me.

13. This Must Be The Place – The Talking Heads

Listen to the words of this song. I don’t know what it is, it gives me chills.

So there it is, a random collection of songs that if they were never made, I would not be the Kristen that you know today.

Welcome to my home – See you soon!
